Our governors are there to make sure we listen to patients, staff, and the local people we serve. They reflect the public voice in how we run the Trust.
We have governors because we are an NHS Foundation Trust. This means we have more freedom to plan local services. We do this by responding to what is important to the people who use our services.
Our governors are there to represent the views of our members. If you use our services, you can easily sign up to become a member of the Trust too. You can find out more about this here. We have around 14,000 people who are members.
We greatly value the role of our governors and listening to what our members say.
You can be a governor if you are:
- A member of the Trust
- 16 years old or over
- A member of the constituency you want to represent (for example, if you want to represent South Tyneside you must live in South Tyneside)
- Are asked by your organisation to be a governor
Governors represent the views of our patients, staff and partner organisations. They are our link to you.
They:
- Make sure we answer to our members and the communities we serve
- Represent our partner organisations
- Talk to our members and help us build networks to reach the wider community
- Help us plan by asking local people for their views
- Help us change, develop and improve how we care for people
There are 25 people on our Council of Governors and this includes:
- The Trust Chair (click here)
- 15 public governors (these are members of the public. The members of the Trust decide who they are through an election process).
- 6 staff governors (these are people who work for the Trust. Other staff decide who they are through an election process).
- 3 appointed governors (these are people who work at in one of our key partners. This could be another part of the NHS, at the university or local council).
Together, they make sure your voice helps shape the care we provide.
