Professor David Steel

Professor Steel is a Consultant Ophthalmologist.

An Ophthalmologist looks after eyes.

His main speciality is vitreoretinal surgery. This is a type of eye surgery that treats problems in the back of the eye, including the retina and the vitreous (the clear, fluid-like jelly inside the eye). 

He is an Honorary Professor of Retinal Surgery at Newcastle University, a visiting Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Liverpool 2018 and an Honorary Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Sunderland 2025. 

Professor Steel is also the Joint Lead for the Northern Ophthalmic Research and Innovation Intitute (NORI), Ex-President of the British and Eire Association of Vitreoretinal Surgeons, an Executive Board Member of Club Jules Gonin and a member of the Vitreoretinal and Research Boards  of Euretina.
