Emergency Departments (ED)
What is ED?
Our Emergency Departments (ED) help to save lives 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
We have an adult Emergency Department (ED) in South Tyneside and an adult Emergency Department (ED) in Sunderland.
We look after people who are very poorly or if they have a bad injury. They often need lifesaving care.
Our ED services are very busy. Most patients arrive to ED in an ambulance or after talking to their GP.
If you are not sure which service you need, please use NHS 111 first before coming to ED.
What can I find ED?
South Tyneside District Hospital: Use the Entrance 11 for Emergency Care. This is to the left of the Ingham Wing Main Entrance and to the right of the Outpatients entrance. Click here to see a site map.
Sunderland Royal Hospital: Use Entrance 2 on Kayll Road. It is to the right of the Main Entrance and to the left of the Adult Emergency Department. Click here to see a site map.
