ARAS (Acute respiratory assessment service)

What is ARAS?

The Acute Respiratory Assessment Service (ARAS) helps people in South Tyneside who have breathing problems. The team checks, treats and supports patients to help them stay as well as possible.

The team works with GPs, community staff, matrons and hospital doctors. Our aim is to treat people early and help stop them from needing to go into hospital.

If a patient does need to go into hospital because their breathing gets worse, the team will help them leave hospital as soon as it is safe. They also give support at home through visits and regular checks.

We also offer:

  • Home oxygen therapy (for people leaving hospital)
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Non‑invasive therapy
  • Nurse‑led outpatient clinics
  • Nebuliser support
  • Education programmes

Where can I find ARAS?

ARAS is located on Ward 20 at South Tyneside District Hospital.

This is in Deans Wing. It is opposite Outpatients.
