Urgent Treatment Centres (UTCs)

What is a UTC?

You should use a UTC if you need urgent help but it’s not a serious emergency. We run two Urgent Treatment Centres (UTC) for adults. One is in South Tyneside and one is in Sunderland.

The best way to access the UTC is by using NHS 111 or talking to your GP first. They can then book you a time slot to arrive.

Our UTCs see and treat many common problems. We can help with things like:

  • sprains and strains
  • suspected broken bones
  • injuries, cuts and bruises
  • stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhoea
  • skin infections and rashes
  • high temperature
  • mental health concerns.

Where can I find a UTC?

Our UTCs are next to our Adult Emergency Departments on both of our sites:

  • South Tyneside District Hospital: Use the Entrance 11 for Emergency Care. This is to the left of the Ingham Wing Main Entrance and to the right of the Outpatients entrance. Click here to see a site map.
  • Sunderland Royal HospitalUse Entrance 2 on Kayll Road. It is to the right of the Main Entrance and to the left of the Adult Emergency Department. Click here to see a site map.
