Who would make a good volunteer? 

A good volunteer could be anyone! People of all abilities, backgrounds, cultures and beliefs make great volunteers. 

The most important thing is that you want to help others. You should also be reliable and have the time to dedicate to helping. 

You need to be 16 or over. If you’re under 16, you could join our Children and Young Persons Group instead. Click here to find out more. 

What do volunteers do?

There are lots of different volunteer roles at STSFT. You could help in our Emergency Department. You might help people find their way around the hospital. You could even welcome people to our new Eye Hospital.

What are the benefits of volunteering? 

There are lots of different benefits. You will:  

  • Help and support people 
  • Make a difference to people’s lives 
  • Give something back 
  • Gain confidence 
  • Learn new skills and gain experience
  • Meet new people and make new friends 
  • Have something to put on your university or college application
  • Have something to put on your CV for future jobs

To apply you need do download an application form. You can do that by clicking here. You then need to fill it in and email it to stsft.volunteer@nhs.net

FAQs

We have answered some more of the most asked questions about volunteering below.

You need to be 16 or older. There is no upper age limit. You just need to be fit enough to do the job.

We need to do checks on everyone that works for the NHS. This is the same whether you’re paid for your job or not. This is to protect our patients and staff.

It should take between 4 and 6 weeks. Once we have finished the paper work, we will contact you. We will arrange training. Once you have finished your training you will get a start date.

Yes. You will get free parking during the time you are volunteering.

No. You will need to pay for your travel yourself.

Yes. You must complete training offered by the Trust. You must do this before you start your role. Depending on the job you take, there may be more training specific to that role.

Yes. You will get a blue volunteer polo shirt. You will also get a lanyard and ID badge that must be always worn. You will need to wear your own smart trousers or a skirt. You should also wear your own comfortable shoes.

We ask that you do at least 2 hours a week but we are flexible.
