If you have a serious injury or life-threatening condition you will receive emergency care in one of our Emergency Departments (ED).

These are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Our ED services are very busy. Most patients arrive to ED in an ambulance or after talking to their GP.

There are 4 emergency care services at STSFT. You can find out more about these by clicking the headers below:

We have an adult Emergency Department (ED) in South Tyneside and an adult Emergency Department (ED) in Sunderland. We also run a children’s Emergency Department (ED) in Sunderland.

Our EDs help to save lives 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We look after people who are very poorly or if they have a bad injury. They often need lifesaving care.

  • injuries, cuts and bruises
  • stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhoea
  • skin infections and rashes
  • high temperature
  • mental health concerns.

We run two Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) units. One in South Tyneside and one in Sunderland.

This service is there to provide urgent medical care to patients on the same day. People who come to SDEC will go home on the same day. We do not need to admit them to hospital.

We run two EAUs. One in South Tyneside and one in Sunderland.

In EAU we look after people who have come to hospital in an emergency. These patients are very unwell and will need to stay overnight. This is the first place they will go so that we can assess them fully.
