Children's Day Unit

What is the Children's Day Unit?

Our Children's Day Unit provides specialist care for children and young people up to age 16 who have been referred by a paediatrician (children's doctor), GP or another health professional. It is run by children's nurses.

Children can have tests and procedures in a safe, child‑friendly place without staying overnight.

We offer:

  • Allergy tests and treatments
  • Kidney (renal) tests and treatments
  • Immunisations
  • Blood tests
  • Rapid access appointments

Our nursery nurses support our trained children’s nurses. They help reduce any stress your child may feel. They are specially trained to support children and young people who may feel worried about their hospital visit. They also support parents and carers and can distract your child during any tests or procedures.

Where can I find the Children's Day Unit?

We are based at South Tyneside District Hospital. Use the main entrance at Ingham Wing and follow signs to the Children's Day Unit.
