Budding athlete Benjamin Miller has handed over a cheque for more than £1,900 to Sunderland Royal Hospital’s head and neck cancer charitable fund to say ‘thanks for saving my mum’.

Army reservist Alex Cairns earned a silver medal in one of the world’s toughest patrol exercises. Alex, who works as an emergency nurse practitioner in Sunderland Royal Hospital’s Emergency Department, serves as a corporal with Newcastle-based 201 Field Hospital, which provides clinical support to the Regular Army on operational tours in times of conflict, peacekeeping and humanitarian situations.

Tom, who is now a qualified multi-craft mechanical engineer, was named national Apprentice of the Year at the IHEEM (Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estates Management Association) awards. This followed on from him winning the 4th year Apprentice of the Year title at the Northern and Yorkshire NHS Assessment Centre’s regional NHS estates apprenticeship presentation evening.

NHS organisations across the North East and North Cumbria are appealing to people with flu-like symptoms or vomiting and diarrhoea to stay away from hospital.
