Leading UK kidney consultant Dr Shalabh Srivastava has been appointed as a senior clinical lecturer at Newcastle University. The honour for Dr Srivastava, who works at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, is for his research work and for his teaching at the Trust and the university.

Army Reserve Colonel and Sunderland Royal Hospital Consultant Vascular Surgeon Ben Banerjee has been appointed as Queen’s Honorary Surgeon. The honour is in recognition of his distinguished military service which began 30 years ago when he joined the Army Reserves while still a medical student at Newcastle University.

Dr Andy Mellon will retire this summer after 24 years as a Consultant Paediatrician at Sunderland Royal Hospital. Dr Mellon has fulfilled a frontline role throughout this time, combining it with his educational role representing Newcastle University’s Medical School at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.
