The family of a coronavirus patient described by one doctor as ‘lucky to be alive’ has said a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to staff for the care and treatment he received at South Tyneside District Hospital. Abul Azad is now recovering at home after spending 56 days in intensive care.

Two hospital consultants have been appointed to lead South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust in its continuing commitment to research and innovation. Mrs Deepali Varma, Consultant Ophthalmologist and Retinal Specialist at Sunderland Eye Infirmary, will be the new Director of Research, and Neonatal Consultant Dr Imran Ahmed has been named as Director of Innovation.

The Midwifery-Led Birthing Centre at South Tyneside District Hospital is celebrating an amazing first year during which it has helped bring around 220 babies into the world and has received an incredible 100% satisfaction rate from mums.
