Health chiefs across the region have welcomed new measures designed to reduce the spread of COVID-19 which come into effect across Northumberland, North Tyneside, Newcastle, Gateshead, South Tyneside, Sunderland and County Durham from 00.01 hrs on Friday 18 September.

Heart specialist Dr Mickey Jachuck will set off on Sunday (September 13th) for his first Great North Run – from his doorstep. Dr Jachuck is among a number of South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust staff who will join the thousands of people worldwide taking part in the Virtual Great North Run on the day the 40th staging of the half-marathon was scheduled to take place.

The Chapman family of South Shields have not let the pandemic stand in the way of their fundraising for the children’s diabetes team at South Tyneside District Hospital. Daniel was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was four years old. He was 13 on August 24th and, in the intervening years, mum, Glynis, and dad, Graham, estimate they have helped to raise about £4,000 to support the work of the specialist team who have helped their son to live as normal a life as possible.

Leaders at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust have taken the difficult but important decision to suspend visiting to all adult inpatient wards at its hospitals in South Tyneside and Sunderland due to rising cases of COVID-19.
