Urgent Treatment Centres
We run two Urgent Treatment Centres (UTC) for adults. One is in South Tyneside and one is in Sunderland.
You should use a UTC if you need urgent help but it’s not a serious emergency. The best way to access urgent care is by using NHS 111 or talking to your GP first.
Our UTCs see and treat many common problems. We can help with things like:
- sprains and strains
- suspected broken bones
- injuries, cuts and bruises
- stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhoea
- skin infections and rashes
- high temperature
- mental health concerns.
Our UTC in Sunderland is open from 8am to midnight, seven days a week, including bank holidays.
Our UTC in South Tyneside is open from 8am to 10pm, seven days a week, including bank holidays.
Our UTCs are next to our Adult Emergency Departments on both of our sites:
South Tyneside Urgent Care for Children (STUCC)
We also run an urgent care centre for children. This is in South Tyneside.
We see and treat children from birth, up to the age of 16 with minor problems.

- Suspected broken bones
- Children with mild breathing problems
- Common childhood infections in the chest, ears or throat
- Children who are being sick or have diarrhoea
- Cuts and open wounds that need closing
- Minor burns
- Minor bumps or head injuries
