We have an adult Emergency Department (ED) in South Tyneside and an adult Emergency Department (ED) in Sunderland. These are both open 24/7. We also run a children’s Emergency Department in Sunderland. This is also open 24/7.
Our Emergency Departments (ED) help to save lives 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We look after people who are very poorly or if they have a bad injury. They often need lifesaving care.
Our ED services are very busy. Most patients arrive to ED in an ambulance or after talking to their GP.
Our teams will assess and triage all patients when they arrive with us. We will see people with the most serious problems first, rather than time order. If you have a minor problem, we may redirect you to a different part of the NHS.
What should I bring with me?
You should bring any medicines that you take, including ones you have bought over the counter. If you have a recent prescription, please bring that too. This helps us to know what you are taking and whether it causes problems with any treatment we might suggest.
What will happen?
We will need to carry our tests and scans to find out what it wrong. Our team looking after you will talk to you and explain what is happening. We may need to admit you to hospital while we work out what the problem is. If you are with a child, you will be able to stay with them.
Some patients might be able to go straight home from ED if everything is ok. For others, we may need to refer you to see another service. You will still be able to go home and come back for follow up.
Please ask our staff any questions you have. We want to make sure you understand what your treatment plan is.
