We treat children and young people (up to 19) in Sunderland and South Tyneside who have epilepsy.

We provide an epilepsy service to children and young people aged 0–19 years in Sunderland and surrounding areas.

Children are referred to our team by GPs, the Children's Emergency Department and wards.

They will be seen initially by either:

  • a consultant paediatrician (children's doctor) with a specialist interest in epilepsy
  • a consultant paediatrician (children's doctor) with expertise in epilepsy and neurodisability

Epilepsy is a condition that affects the brain.

People with epilepsy have seizures. A seizure is a short event where the brain’s signals are mixed up. This happens when there is a burst of unusual electrical activity in the brain.

This can cause changes in:

  • Movement
  • Awareness
  • Behaviour
  • Senses

Not all seizures look the same.
