Our neuro rehab team support people to recover and live as well as they can. This might be after an acute problem like a stroke. Or it might be to help people who live with a long-term problem with their central nervous system.

It is hard to predict how long your recovery will take or how much rehab you will have. This is different for each person. It will depend on how severe your condition is.

Our aim is to support your recovery, improve your quality of life and help get you home.

Our team will meet with you and/or your family/friends to help set goals to meet your needs.

If you need rehab care in hospital this will take place on our Hume Unit (D46) in Sunderland. This provides specialist care for those who need to be in hospital.

People come to the Hume Unit from other wards in the Trust, other hospitals and from home.

We also provide rehab care in other ways. We see lots of patients in our outpatient clinics to give ongoing care and support. We also work with other voluntary services to help you get the support you need.

We want to help you to recover and / or live well with your condition. We can help you with:

  • Physical things like how well you can move parts of your body and your coordination.
  • Your memory and how well you can remember things.
  • Improving how well you can concentrate on things.
  • Your speech and how well you can communicate with people.
  • Any emotional support or help with adapting to lifestyle changes.

We will talk to you about your rehab plan. We want to help you make informed choices about what will work best.

We have many people ready to support you in your rehab journey.

Dr Naweed Sattar, (Consultant for Stroke and Neuro Rehab) leads a team of doctors and nurses who are experts in neuro rehab. Our team also includes lots of other experts:

  • Dieticians
  • Speech and language therapists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Occupational therapists

Your own family, friends and/or carers are important people in your rehab too. They will be there to encourage and support you along the way. They are welcome to come along to any therapy sessions we have with you.

We will work with you to find a rehab plan that works well for you. We want to help you know more about your condition so that you can manage it well.
