Gateshead Equipment Services (GES) gives disability equipment to people who need help at home. The service is for anyone who lives in Gateshead or is registered with a Gateshead GP.
We carry out assessments to make sure people get the right equipment for their needs. Our goal is to help people stay safe, feel supported, and live as independently as possible. We support people and their carers in many ways. We:
- help stop unnecessary hospital stays by giving people equipment so they can stay safe at home.
- support safe discharge from hospital by making sure equipment is ready when someone returns home or moves into care.
- encourage independence and self‑care by helping people do daily tasks on their own.
- help carers give safe care by providing tools that make caring easier and safer.
- keep people safe from harm by checking that equipment is right, safe and well‑fitted.
- makes sure people have a good experience of care so they feel respected, supported and confident at home.
You can be referred by:
- Adult Social Care Direct
- Staff from Gateshead Council
- Healthcare professionals with a GES PIN
- NHS services outside Gateshead (if a Gateshead resident chooses them for treatment)
We look after and repair most pieces of equipment. Some items need a different team. Powered mobile hoists are repaired by Prism Medical. You can call them on 01924 840 100 if you need help with a hoist.
We recycle and reuse a large amount of equipment each year. In total, this adds up to about £2.6 million worth of equipment. This helps save money and reduces waste. If you no longer need your equipment, we can collect it for free. This helps us reuse it for someone else who may need it.
